Live Television in Germany

In Germany, the mainstream television output can be divided into three divisions: The public service channels ARD and ZDF, which are aimed primarily at the older, more traditional audience, the commercial broadcasters the RTL Group and ProSiebenSat.1, and the Pay-TV channels from Sky.

The ARD channel also called "Das Erste"(the first) is  made up of the nine regional broadcasters WDR, SWR, SR, RBB, NDR, MDR, HR, BR and Radio Bremen. Each contributes to making programmes and broadcasting content nationally for the Premier Channel.

ZDF is known as the Second Channel and this network has a variety of channels. The main ones are ZDF Info and ZDF Kultur but there is also the innovative youth oriented ZDF Neo with a past programmes available in the ZDF media library and available to watch on demand.

Rounding up the public programming, there is a children's channel called Kika Phoenix, as well as 3Sat (with ORF and SRF) and the Franco-German channel ARTE which provides programmes to do with art and culture.

The RTL Group SA operates free to view  TV channels including  RTL, RTL II, VOX, Super RTL, RTLNitro and the news channel N-TV,  These channels are available to view  via streaming and but also  available on demand . The biggest competitor to the RTL Group is the ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG with the channels ProSieben, Sat1, kabel eins, Sat1 Gold, ProSieben and sixx from Maxx. Again, many programmes are streamed for free on the Internet as well as TV but you do have to pay for some content.  There are also countless smaller regional and local channels.

German TV provides a wealth of different special-interest channels. The principle news channels are N24, N-TV, and Tagesschau24 ARD.  Kika (by ARD and ZDF), Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network lead the way in Children’s broadcasting.

For sports coverage, the pay to view TV channel Sky is the principle station with live broadcasts of the Bundesliga and the Champions League. There are some free-to-view live sports streams available  include RTL with Formula One, ZDF Champions League magazine and the Europa League at Kabel Eins.
